Methodology & Limitations Inside the Moneyball Value Score

Priority first. Cost in context.

Specialist score = 50% priority + 20% WAR + 30% salary efficiency. Overall value = 65% WAR + 35% salary efficiency. Each component is normalized to 0–1 and the result is shown out of 100.

Efficiency = WAR per $1M ÷ 2. WAR = WAR ÷ 5 for hitters and starters, or WAR ÷ 2 for relievers. All normalized components are capped at 0 and 1.

Fixed illustrative benchmarks

Priority ranges: wRC+ 70–160; OBP .280–.400; SLG .330–.570; defensive runs −15–20. Pitching blends 50% ERA+ (70–160), 25% strikeout rate (15–35%), and 25% inverse walk rate (4–12%).

For a range [low, high], normalization is (value − low) ÷ (high − low). Pitching walks use 1 minus that result.

What the score cannot tell you

These are heuristic weights, not calibrated MLB valuations or percentiles. WAR already includes parts of offense and defense, so specialist weights deliberately emphasize them again. Compare within the selected position and priority.

Cheap controlled salaries can dominate efficiency. Ratio metrics are descriptive—not market value. Budget applies to the selected salary basis; AAV, annual salary and asking estimates are not equivalent. Trade assets, taxes, and benefits are excluded. No automatic roster or payroll analysis is performed.
